Heute veröffentlicht Kevin Morby sein achtes Studioalbum „Little Wide Open“ via Dead Oceans und präsentiert begleitend das Video zum Album-Highlight „100,000“.

Der Song verdeutlicht, was „Little Wide Open“ für Morby bedeutet. Die preisgekrönte Schriftstellerin Rachel Kushner schreibt in ihrem Essay über das Album mit dem Titel „Field Guide to the North American Troubadour“:

„For him, the LWO is the big sky, the small lives—it’s his origins in the Midwest and every duty and modesty and familiarity and isolation: the land, the people, and the parts of that inside him.“

Kevin Morby selbst erklärt dazu:

„I consider any town with a population 100,000 or less to be a small town in America. This song is a fantasy of all the mysterious and quiet lives taking place in those anonymous towns that you often pass on the side of the highway. Yet all those tiny lives must feel just as big and significant as anybody else’s, of course; full of people falling in love, dreaming their dreams, living their lives day by day.“

Musikalisch ließ sich Morby bei „100,000“ von der Gitarrenarbeit des verstorbenen Tom Verlaine inspirieren. Für den Song holte er seine langjährige Weggefährtin und „Guitar-Sibling“ Meg Duffy ins Studio, deren eruptives Gitarrenspiel im Finale des Tracks für ihn zu den Highlights des Albums zählt.

Morby beschreibt die Zusammenarbeit als eine Art musikalische Telepathie – geprägt von ihrer gemeinsamen Liebe zu Verlaine und Television –, wodurch sich die erneute Studioarbeit vollkommen mühelos angefühlt habe.
