Album ‚The Catastrophist‘ stellt den Begriff wiedermal in Frage, denn Tortoise lassen sich nicht in ein Korsett zwängen. Obwohl sie sich weiterhin zwischen Dub, Rock, Jazz, Kraut, elektronischen und/oder minimalistischen Sounds orientieren, klingen die Ergebnisse immer nach nach der Trademark-Ästhetik, die man kennt und liebt, auf einem Album, das von launischen Synthie-Jams, von Bass und Beat gesteuerten Songs über das wirklich seltsame Cover von David Essex‘ 1973er Radiohit ‚Rock On‘ bis hin zur leicht bittersüßen weirden wie seelenvollen Indieballade ‚Yonder Blue‘, gesungen von Yo La Tengos Georgia Hubley wirklich alles zu bieten hat, was das Tortoise Universum hergibt.
