Calapez (born Lisbon, Portugal, 1980) had piano lessons when we was a kid, but music didn’t feel like destiny at the time (although now he thanks mom and dad that he’s had them). He went on to do photography and video, topping it off with a chemistry graduation at university.Curiously it was at that point that Calapez decided that lab work wasn’t his thing, and DJing (which he had been doing for some time, in a slightly random way) and producing seemed like a much better idea, heading off to London to learn the way of the producer.
Manuel Calapez story in techno, once back in Portugal, begins in partnership with Filipe “Jackspot” Furão, teaming up as Internal Sync. Together they’ve wandered around Techno, Minimal and House, getting releases on labels like Datapunk, Klang Gymnastik, Fortek or Plasteline, remixing people like Tristy Nesh and Access Denied.
His solo work is more about techno and weird beats and house and… well, it touches a lot of stuff… As with his personal path, also his music floats to wherever Calapez feels it to be the best way. The turning point for Calapez’ production has to be 2009, when his Flight Case EP became techno record of the month for Raveline mag in August that year. Since then, the discover of his music path has been more and more enjoyable, with calapez nailing remixes and EP’s and unleashing his potential.
