Während Squalloscopes Debut-Album Soft Invasions das Reisen, flüchtige Intimitäten und ein Driften zwischen Orten vertonte, ist die Desert EP eine Ankunft – eine Postkarte von jemandem, der einen temporären Beobachtungspunkt gefunden hat. Die Desert EP spielt im Gegensatz zu ihrer Vorgängerin an Orten, die mehr metaphorisch als geographisch sind. Sie entstand in kurzer Zeit, Songwriting und Produktion fanden gleichzeitig statt. Sounds wurden laufend geschnitten, gehobelt, geloopt, synthetisiert und umarrangiert. Am Ende blieben als einzige wirklich akustische Instrumente Squalloscopes Stimme, ein verstimmtes Klavier und das Geräusch eines Löffels, der gegen eine Duschwanne schlägt.
Squalloscope ist ein Alias der in Wien lebenden Anna Kohlweis, die von 2006 bis 2009 drei Soloalben unter dem Namen Paper Bird produziert hat. Anna Kohlweis arbeitet gleichermaßen an Songwriting, Produktion, Aufnahme, Artwork und Video und setzt meistens gerne den Text ins das Zentrum jeder Komposition. Squalloscope wurde 2012 mit Soft Invasions geboren, ein Album basierend auf Notizen aus Reisetagebüchern, begleitet vom Bild eines vermutlich niemals ankommenden Zuges. Die Desert EP verbindet 2013 einmal mehr die künstlerischen Eckpunkte dieses Ein-Frau-Unternehmens: Spoken Word, semifiktives Geschichtenerzählen in Wort und Bild, vielschichtige, mehrstimmige Chöre, die Arbeit mit gefundenen Artefakten und das Zusammenfügen von Beats, akustischen Samples und der eigenen Stimme.
While Squalloscopes debut album Soft Invasions was about a restless journey, fleeting intimacies and a fearless drifting in between places, the Desert EP is an arrival of sorts, a postcard from someone who has found a temporary observation point. The Desert EP, in contrast to its predecessor, is more about metaphorical places than geographical ones. Recording didn´t take long, songwriting and production happened simultaneously. Sounds were continuously cut, sliced, looped and rearranged and in the end, the only truly acoustic instruments remaining were Squalloscope’s voice, a detuned piano, and the sound of a spoon hitting against a shower tub.
Squalloscope is an alias of Vienna based Anna Kohlweis, who produced three solo albums as Paper Bird between 2006 and 2009. Anna Kohlweis works on songwriting, production, recording, artwork and video and likes to see the lyrical content of a song as the centrepiece of her composition. Squalloscope was born in 2012 with Soft Invasions, an album based on notes from travel journals, accompanied by the mental image of a train that never arrives. The Desert EP (2013) once more connects the artistic cornerstones of this one-woman-enterprise: spoken word, semi-fictional storytelling in music and pictures, multi-layered choirs, working with found artifacts and the merging of beats, acoustic samples and her own voice.
