HYPOXIA – FINAL DESTINATION: VOLCANO

In October 2014 endurance athlete Guido Kunze wants to realise his dream of conquering Chile’s Ojos del Salado, the world’s tallest volcano that rises up to 6,900m/22,638ft. His plan is to set a new world record with his bespoke fatbike, a bicycle with oversize tyres. Having prepared for his adventure for over a year, in particular training at high altitude, the time has come when he must pull it off.
In less than three days he wants to cycle from the Chilean coast across the Atacama Desert, up steep mountain trails and across rough, trackless terrain to the summit of the fiery mountain. As he climbs higher and higher, he begins to realise just what a crazy challenge he has set himself. Pushed to his physical and mental limits by the thin air, blizzards and extreme temperatures, every single pedal push takes a huge effort. Can he rise above himself?
