MORGOTH is one of the earliest and most important German Death Metal bands. In 1987 four young kids from Meschede, Marc Grewe (vocals, bass), Carsten Otterbach (guitar), Harry Busse (guitar) and Rüdiger Hennecke (drums), came together in brilliant blasphemy to form this musically trailblazing band. By the end of 1987 they recorded their debut demo tape, Pits Of Utumno, which made its way to Robert Kampf’s newly founded Century Media Records in nearby Dortmund. MORGOTH signed a deal with CMR and their second demo, Resurrection Absurd, was pressed onto vinyl in 1989.
After that the band was unstoppable. Having only performed several local underground shows, in early 1990 they took Europe by storm on their debut tour with Pestilence and Autopsy. The next release was mixed at the ultimate Death Metal temple, Tampa, Florida’s renowned Morrisound Studios where acts like Death, Morbid Angel and Obituary had recorded their classic masterpieces. MORGOTH was quickly offered a next European tour with Obituary and Demolition Hammer, so they only had enough time to record 5 songs for the Eternal Fall EP, which became another milestone of the genre.
That same year, in order to satisfy MORGOTH’s fast growing fanbase, both EP’s were put together on one CD for a more extensive release and by the end of the year, new member Sebastian Swart took over bass duties, leaving Marc to concentrate solely on vocals. Cursed, the band’s first regular full-length studio album was released in 1991, introducing fans of extreme Death Metal to a darker undertone and advanced songwriting. The release was followed by MORGOTH’s first US tour with Kreator and Biohazard in 1991 as well as intense gigging in Europe.
The early 90’s were the highpoint of the Death Metal movement and MORGOTH was the pioneering and leading German band, but at the same time MORGOTH was never a band that stuck with the same image or sound too long. The following 1993 album, Odium, was influenced by some industrial grooves and saw their most aggressive guitar sound yet. Again they played all of the major European festivals and hit the road with the likes of Paradise Lost, Unleashed, Tiamat and more. MORGOTH’s last studio album, Feel Sorry For The Fanatic, came out in 1996 and here the band continued to follow their own, more experimental path, intertwining industrial and dark 80’s influences, taking them further away from their Death Metal roots. After a final European tour with Die Krupps and Richthofen, MORGOTH split up in 1997…
In the year 2011, MORGOTH announced their long overdue return to the scene after almost 15 years of silence. Featuring original members Marc Grewe (vocals), Harry Busse (guitars), Sebastian Swart (now on guitars) as well as newly recruited Sotirios Kelekidis (bass) and Marc Reign (drums, ex Destruction), MORGOTH reunited in the light of the 20th anniversary celebration of the release of their legendary “Cursed” album and kicked off a string of performances at acclaimed festivals like Wacken (D), Hellfest (F), Summer Breeze (D), Brutal Assault (CZ), Party.San (D), Neurotic Deathfest (NL), Rock Hard (D), Maryland Deathfest (US) or also the Barge To Hell cruise (Miami/Bahamas) as well as a few selected club-shows. This comeback has by now organically lasted 3 years and has been captured (amongst others at 2011’s Way Of Darkness festival show) and skilfully mixed by Dan Swanö (Bloodbath, Edge Of Sanity) for MORGOTH’s impressing first ever live album and DVD release, “Cursed To Live”, in 2012.
In late 2013 and early 2014, MORGOTH decided to take some months off from playing shows in order to focus on songwriting, since the good atmosphere and newly sparked creativity from these last years had naturally caused some new ideas to come up. The band is currently in the studio working on new material and the first brand-new music can already be expected for later in 2014…feel warned!
