Grinchcore is an emerging cultural trend focusing on „grinchness that opts into grumpyness“ it is in response to a happy party subculture, generally executed by urban hipsters. Dr. Seuss, the founder of the Grinch character calls grinchcore „one facet of a growing anti-happy sentiment“ and imagined a Grinch as someone grumpy, with an anti-holiday spirit, opposed to celebrations and with a coarse, greedy attitude.
The grinch first appeared in the 1957 story „How the Grinch Stole Christmas“ and has since stayed under the radar, except for two short appearances, 2000 in the widely succesful movie „The Grinch“ and later in a much more secretive manner in the online parallel world ,Second Life‘. In this game he became famous for appearing in so called erotic rooms and watching couples in the midst of their love game, disguising himself as ,Ralph Pootawn‘. From then on the grinch became a well-known symbol of anti-hipsterism, especially in the subculture of the post-internet art world from where it now slowly is deriving into a mainstream youth icon, promoting green skin and a general frustration among those who seek distinction in bad temper.
